Part Time Breakfast Cook


Position Synopsis:
The Cook prepares a full range of food and baked products for residence meals, and snacks. Carries out duties related to meal service, and cleaning. Supervise kitchen operations in the absence of the Director of Dietary Services. The Cook must be self-disciplined and well-organized with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. A calm disposition is essential in a hot, fast-paced working environment. The Cook must be a good team worker who is able to follow direction from the department’s Director, and handle many tasks at once.

Work Experience:
• Several years of experience in quality large volume food preparation.
• Valid Food Handler Training Certificate (after the employment offer is made).
• Desire to continue career improvement.
• Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Technical Skills and/or Abilities:
• Proficient knowledge of commercial food preparation and equipment.
• Basic customer service skills.
• Basic math skills and ability to apply weights, measures, and amounts in recipes.
• Such qualifications as the Employer may find appropriate and acceptable.
• Must possess the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
• ability to lift heavy objects and stand and walk short distances throughout the day
• ability to tolerate heat from kitchen area

Reporting and Supervision:
See facility organization charts. The employee works in an independent or interdependent decision making setting. Makes decisions that affect the day-to-day operations of the kitchen/dining room.

The Cook will:
a. Assist the Director of Dietary Services in kitchen operations.
b. Prepare a full range of food items to be served in given quantities, using standardized recipes, by a stated time for resident regular meal(s), and/or therapeutic diets.
c. Utilize knowledge of cooking methods and preparation time requirements to ensure that adequate amounts, of properly prepared foods is provided in a timely fashion.
d. Use cooking knowledge and experience to adjust recipes for factors such as special diets, etc. Applies basic math to expand or shrink recipes and adjust portion sizes for meals.
e. Prepare adequate food amounts required for cooking production by estimating needs according to the menu rotation.
f. Adheres to manufacturer instructions and standard facility procedures when operating machinery and equipment used in cooking including slicers, choppers, broilers, griddles, blenders, microwaves, etc. to assure safety and avoid damage to equipment.
g. Clean the work area, refrigerators, stoves, ovens, storeroom, and utensils in order to comply with facility, and health unit standards; clean and sanitize equipment properly.
h. Perform quality checks for taste and appearance of finished food products. Alert Director of Dietary Services to problems and make recommendations about procedures and in serving meals.
i. Maintain required records, e.g., menu changes, purchase orders, delivery receipts, temperature checks.
j. Assists in directing the activities of other employees in the kitchen/dining room.
k. Set up, serves, and assures proper portions are served using portion control standards during the specified serving times.
l. Observe employers’ policies during all activities.
m. Adhere to all district health and safety policies, including all precautions of infection control.
n. Store, date, and label leftover food.
o. Accept deliveries; checks packing slips, dates, and sorts incoming food.
p. Assist in ordering and inventory process.
q. Make routine decisions in absence of supervisor.
r. Maybe required to participate, in the training of employees.
s. Perform other such duties and assume other such responsibilities as may be assigned.
t. Keep abreast of new information, innovative ideas and techniques.
