Part Time Resident Aide (PSW)




As primary care giver for the residents, the Resident Aide must constantly seek out ways to improve the resident’s well-being. The delivery of the services from the nursing department depends upon the collective facility services, and the individual resident needs, providing a setting that is supportive with forethought for the residents well-being. The areas of work include duties in nursing that support the residents’ activities of daily living, kitchen and housekeeping.

completion of a Health Care Aide Program, or Personal Support Worker course at an approved college
current First Aide Certificate and C. P. R.
good interpersonal and communication skills (written and oral English)
abilities to lift heavy objects, and, stand and walk moderate distances throughout the shift
police check

Reporting to the Director of Nursing (DON) or Shift RPN, the RA’s responsibilities will include:
1. Providing direct resident care and respond to emergencies as per protocol and/or directed by the DORC or RPN to meet the needs of the residents. Providing the resident with assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, skin care, dressing, mobility, and hygiene, etc.) and complete related charting.
2. Exercise sound judgement and respond in a professional manner that respects choice, consent and resident satisfaction, ensuring that the provision of resident care is delivered in accordance with established standards practised, and their changing needs.
3. Report in a consistent timely manner any change of resident condition and of all new situations to the Director of Resident Care and/or RPN, and take appropriate action.
4. Assist in teaching residents good health habits and encouraging residents to remain independent within their own capabilities.
5. Assist in maintaining the physical and psycho social environment, which meets the needs of the residents. Encourage residents to attend activities and assist as needed.
6. Completing assigned laundry, and cleaning duties.
7. Work in cooperation with the housekeeping, and administration departments to ensure that standards of cleanliness, safety and maintenance are maintained.
8. Communicate (both verbally and written) with other departmental staff and departments in the facility with information regarding a resident’s sickness, leave of absence, changes in dietary requirements, maintenance, etc., to ensure a seamless delivery of service.
9. Assist in activities to prevent and/or minimize effect of exposure to health hazards such as infection, disease, and aggressive residents.
10. Learn the phone system.
11. Be knowledgeable of and practice in the facility’s fire, safety and emergency programs.
